This is my go to white bread recipe that doesn't require a bread machine.
- 2 cups warm water
- 2/3 cups white sugar
- 1 1/2 tbl active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 6 cups bread flour
- In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water, then stir in yeast. Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam.
- Mix salt and oil into yeast. Mix flour 1 cup at a time. I love to use my kitchen aid with a bread hook for this part (but you don't have to).
3. Knead dough on lightly floured surface until smooth. Place in a well oiled bowl, then turn dough to coat. Cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
4. Punch dough down. Knead for a few minutes and divide in half. Shape into loaves & place into 2 oiled/sprayed 9x5 loaf pans. Allow to rise for 30 minutes or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans.
5. Bake at 320* for around 42 minutes.
I've also done this recipe with chunks of cheese and Parmesan mixed in. I just increased my cooking time.
